A former NYPD officer was sentenced Thursday to 4 years in prison for plotting to kill her ex-husband, according to court records.
Shereese Murray, 33, of Central Islip, New York, was found guilty last year by a jury in Suffolk County Court of second-degree conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child.
In addition to the prison sentence, Suffolk County Judge Robert Doyle ordered her to serve an additional six years of post-release supervision, according to testimony.
Prosecutors said Murray, an NYPD officer for two years until she resigned last year, coerced her now-15-year-old son to play a role in the alleged conspiracy by repeatedly telling him he had to pretend to have seen her husband, Michael, with another man.
Authorities said Murray, who claimed her ex-husband had sexually abused her son, kept an account of the alleged incident and allegedly asked her son to delete messages indicating that it occurred from the child’s social media accounts.
In March, Murray’s son wrote a letter to the judge imploring him to sentence her to long prison time.
“I was bullied into committing this crime. My mom kept on saying that my dad had abused me, and the media kept asking my mom about it, and it just kept happening,” the letter read. “It was insane, and you need to take it seriously.”
During the trial, Murray’s ex-husband testified that he and his wife lived in a similar state of marital discord, both alleged that they suffered sexual abuse, and both claimed they had sought therapy.
Deputy District Attorney John Collins had called Murray a “highly dangerous individual” who “also wanted a scapegoat,” according to reports.
According to court records, Michael Murray first filed for divorce in 2013. The pair later had a legal separation and an amicable divorce in 2015.
The relationship did not improve, and in 2016, the couple agreed on child custody, the terms of which included Murray’s son staying with his father, and Murray having physical custody.
But prosecutors said Murray was desperate to hurt her ex-husband, who was no longer permitted to see her son.
During the trial, prosecutors showed jurors videos of Murray, allegedly posing as an actress in a sex tape with a fake boyfriend. In one video, she repeatedly demands her son engage in sex acts.
